Planned Giving

What is a bequest?

A bequest is a gift of property under the terms of a will or other estate planning instrument. This may include cash, publicly traded securities, or other real or personal property types, such as jewelry, artwork, or real estate.

Growing Hope thanks you for including us in your plans. We are honored to have your support in our vision of a world where food is a human right.

Below is some suggested language to include in your will and/or other estate planning documents for certain types of bequests. However, regardless of the type of bequest you are considering, we strongly urge you to consult your attorney to learn how best to include a bequest in your estate plan and to understand the tax consequences of making such a gift.

Unrestricted Bequest of Cash

If you are considering making an unrestricted bequest of cash to Growing Hope, we recommend the following language:

I hereby give, devise, and bequeath _________ and No/100 dollars ($DOLLARS) to Growing Hope, a nonprofit organization located at 922 W. Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, Federal Tax ID #74-3091845, for Growing Hope’s general uses and purpose. Reasonable administrative costs may be charged to this gift.

Expendable Bequest of Cash for a Specific Purpose

If you are considering making a bequest of cash to Growing Hope to support a particular program or activity of Growing Hope, we recommend the following language:  I hereby give, devise, and bequeath ________ and No/100 dollars ($DOLLARS) to Growing Hope, a nonprofit organization located at 922 W. Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, Federal Tax ID #74-3091845, to support the following purposes: [insert specific purposes]. Reasonable administrative costs may be charged to this gift.

Unrestricted Endowed Bequest of Cash

If you are considering making an endowed bequest of cash to Growing Hope, we recommend the following language:

I hereby give, devise, and bequeath ________ and No/100 dollars ($DOLLARS) to Growing Hope, a nonprofit organization located at 922 W. Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, Federal Tax ID #74-3091845. The property comprising this gift may, for investment purposes, be commingled with any of the investment assets of Growing Hope, but the gift shall be entered into Growing Hope’s books and records as an endowment fund within the meaning of applicable law, which is not wholly expendable on a current basis. The gift will be known as the ________ Fund (the “Fund”).  Reasonable administrative costs may be charged to the Fund. Growing Hope may appropriate for expenditure or accumulate so much of the Fund as Growing Hope determines is prudent to support its objects and purposes, per applicable law and Growing Hope’s spending policies in effect from time to time. It is my intent to fulfill the purposes of Growing Hope best that Growing Hope shall have flexibility in appropriating and spending from the Fund.

Bequest of Non-Cash Property or Percentage of an Estate

If you are considering making a bequest of property other than cash, or if you are considering bequeathing a percentage of the total value of your estate, we recommend that you consult with your attorney to determine the applicable tax consequences and appropriate language for inclusion in your will or other estate planning documents.

Corporate Giving

With your company’s support, we can continue breaking down the barriers to food access. Here are some of the ways that your company can partner with Growing Hope:

Endowment Fund

Growing Hope has a permanent endowment with the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. You may choose to donate any amount directly to Growing Hope’s endowment fund online and receive a tax receipt for your contribution. Alternatively, you may set up your own private endowment.

Donors often find that their gift helps to encourage a family tradition of philanthropy. Endowment gifts provide an opportunity to engage family and friends in our community. Contributions to the fund can be made on behalf of that hard-to-buy-for person, or to celebrate special occasions. An endowment gift will establish a legacy of giving.

Your private endowment begins with an investment of $10,000. This investment can be made in one lump sum, or over a period of ten years. Once this $10,000 total has been reached the fund will begin assisting those facing food insecurity. Each year, a percentage of the fund will be distributed to help us achieve our goals. With one gift, the impact of each investment can be felt for generations.

If you would like additional information on endowment funds or to begin setting up your own private endowment fund, feel free to contact the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation.
