 Growing Hope's 2015 Workshop Schedule

Thank you for your interest in our workshops! We have quite a schedule planned for 2015! 

The last Saturday of every month from 1pm-4pm we offer "Learn and Serves," a great way to learn about gardening projects and volunteer your time to help Growing Hope fill our gardening needs! For more information about Growing Hope's "Learn and Serves" e-mail Julia,  

Some of Growing Hope's workshop are free of charge with suggested donation, others we ask you pay a $10 class fee. If you are a 2015 Growing Gardens Individual/Household member you receive one free workshop from one of our fee-based workshops. As a Growing Gardens Group member, your garden receives four free workshops per group. If you'd like to use your Growing Gardens benefit for a free workshop e-mail Ana Cristina at Otherwise, register in advance by filling out the online form or bring cash or check to the workshop!

"Fall Planting" (Learn & Serve)
Our August Learn and Serve is an interactive, hands-on Fall Planting workshop that will include demonstrations and discussions on the best fall crops, when to plant them, direct seeding vs. transplanting, and how to harvest. It will be followed by relevant service work preparing the Growing Hope farm for the fall.

 "Gardening in the Fall"
Extend your growing season with fall gardening tips and techniques! This workshop will cover fall season gardening, choosing appropriate varieties, plant placement, watering guidelines and best practices for growing and harvesting through the first frost. This workshop is great for both first-time gardeners and seasoned growers. All participants will receive a special 15% discount at the Fall 2 Day Plant Sale!

"Saving Seeds"
Want to use the seeds your plants have generated for you? Saving seeds is a workshop on the how-to’s of extracting and preparing seeds for the following growing season, facilitated by Eric Kampe.

"Putting Your Garden to Bed" (Learn & Serve)
 As apart of our "Learn and Serve" volunteer and workshop series, join us on Growing Hope's farm to learn easy techniques to prepare your garden for the colder months. The workshop will be followed relevant service work preparing the Growing Hope farm for winter hibernation.

Learn how to grow, harvest and cook with all kinds of seasonal greens. Growing Hope will do a harvest and cooking demonstration on leafy greens and how to create tasty recipes with all those greens!

"Installing Raised Beds and Containers in Your Garden" (May Learn & Serve)
Growing Hope's Farm Manager Jared will show how to plant in raised beds and container gardens for your yard or porch. After the presentation participants will spend time volunteering for Growing Hope on our urban farm.

"Planting Your Vegetable Garden Basics"
Growing Hope's Farm Manager, Jared, and Growing Healthy Food Access VISTA, Britney, will introduce you to the basics of planting your own vegetable garden in raised beds or in the ground.

"Growing Hope's Garden Resource Kickoff!"
With the spring garden season fast approaching gardeners can get excited about planting and growing with Growing Hope. Attendees will be able to access garden resources and participate in learning sessions about gardening. The kickoff will feature community organizations from across Ypsilanti providing information about seeds, pollinator gardens, Garden, and more. In addition, there will be a Seed Swap, a basic vegetable gardening workshop, activities for kids, and presentations from community gardeners who participated in Growing Hope's Garden Leadership Training. The Garden Season Kickoff is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to sign-up for Growing Garden Membership at the event.

"No-Till Weed Free Garden" 
Always wanted to garden, but are tired, busy, and/or getting older and not real excited about pulling weeds? Deanna White, a 26 year Master Gardener will teach you how to made a successful no-till, virtually weed free garden. "No-till" means there is no need for a rototiller; the ground will not need to be turned over or touched in any way to be prepared for planting. Come learn with clear instructions given, plus get free garden seeds, informative handouts, and door prizes.

"Fermentation on Wheels!"
Tara Whitsitt will be conducting a hands-on vegetable fermentation workshop with Growing Hope to teach simple preservation skills with local, seasonal ingredients and explain the benefits of fermentation. Tasting the items and touring the bus will also take place. Feel free to bring in your own starter cultures for exchange and discussion or helpful tips.

"Intro to Food Justice and Security" as part of Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice's Food and Justice Program  
Erica Bloom, Growing Hope's Program Manager will give a presentation and lead a discussion on food justice and security issues on a local and global context. The presentation will include group discussions and activities to think about how food justice and security issues affects the lives of many in Washtenaw County. The talk is part of Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice Food Justice program

"Planting Pollinator Gardens" as part of Growing Hope's Monthly "Learn and Serves" 
April's Learn & Serve event is extra exciting! Growing Hope is partnering with Ypsi Melissa to present a special workshop on gardening for pollinators. The workshop will feature a panel of Drew Lathin of Creating Sustainable Landscapes, LLC, Mary Duff-Silverman of the University of Michigan's Museum of Natural History Butterfly Garden, and Jamie Berlin of Ypsi Melissa. The presentation will be followed by service learning in Growing Hope's pollinator gardens!

"Growing Herbs in Your Own Garden"
Ypsilanti local, Lisa Bashert will give a presentation on planting herbs in your garden. Among many of her sustainability projects, she is a beekeeper and the marketing coordinator for the Ypsi Food Co-op, and runs the Local Honey Project. She is a founding member of the Ypsilanti Growers Cooperative, and has long been involved with Growing Hope.
When: Friday, May 1st, from 6:30pm-8:00pm (as part of YpsiPlanti Spring Plant Sale!)
