What better way to enjoy fresh produce, get some physical activity, and connect with neighbors than a neighborhood community garden? The Recreation Park Community Garden, founded in May, 2004, serves these purposes and more for the Normal Park neighborhood in Ypsilanti. In its first growing season, residents from Normal Park and Woods Road neighborhoods tended the garden's 17 individual plots, growing a wide variety of vegetables and herbs. Three additional plots were reserved for the "Plant a Row for the Hungry" (PAR) program. The PAR plots, tended by the Ypsilanti Garden Club and many Recreation Park gardeners, yielded over 150 pounds of vegetables that were donated to Food Gatherers.
