About the Vendor
Nightshade farm is a fully diversified vegetables, that specializes in heirloom tomatoes and peppers, including many slow food Ark of Taste varieties. Started in 2010 we are currently housed at Tilian Farm Development Center in Ann Arbor Township, an incubator for beginning farmers. In addition to our fresh heirloom produce, we also make licensed salsa, hot sauce, paprika powder, chili vinegar, and other nightshade-based products made under the cottage food bill. Nightshade farm has been a vendor at the Ypsilanti Farmers Markets since fall 2010 and our produce and products can also be found at Argus Farm Stop in Ann Arbor, the Farmer’s Hand in Detroit, and at restaurants in Detroit distributed through Grow Eastern Market (GEM). This season, we are expanding our production of transplants available and we are increasing our number of varieties. For 2017, we are growing 88 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, 50 varieties of hot peppers (chiles), 20 varieties of sweet peppers, and many other heirloom and open-pollinated vegetables. In addition to our produce, salsa, and other products, we focus on growing as much of our own seed as possible, to ensure access to the most regionally adapted and climate resilient seed available. We partner with a local seed company Nature and Nurture seeds. We use exclusively organic, low till practices and integrate companion planting and seed production whenever possible. Our farm is powered by sunshine, compost, water, words and hands and we do not use any synthetic chemicals on any kind.
